Bulgaria has literally announced a facist and neo-Nazi, Valeri Simeonov, (who is also the Regional Prime Minister) to be in charge of “taking care” of Romani people who plans on building modern MODERN CONCENTRATION CAMPS and HUMAN ZOOS with Roma being the main attraction in them. They have also announced Ilian Todorov, from the ATAKA party (a party that is EXTREMELY racist, anti-Roma, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Turkish, xenophobic and ultranationalist) as Bulgaria, Sofia’s regional governor.

There has been a rise in anti-Roma hate crimes, more hate speach, an increase in police brutality and even ANTI-ROMA MARCHES in the country. Yet the EU doesn’t seem to take notice of this or find it in their time to put an end to this. And considering the fact that Roma are deemed “Europe’s most hated people” I doubt they will try to stop this unless people show them that we care and want them to end this.

Please sign this petition to the EU Parliament asking them to step in and remove Valeri Simeonov and Ilian Todorov from their position of power and help Romani people:

Ancestry.com takes DNA ownership rights from customers and their relatives

I will take every opportunity to warn people against these genetics testing “services.” They are huge data mines and prospecting firms, and if you are Indigenous, your submission may be their way around tribal moratoriums against these sorts of collections.

Plus, they don’t mean anything as far as Indigenous identity.

Oh wow, read this. Excerpt, emphasis mine:

“Buried in
the “Informed Consent” section, which is incorporated into the Terms of
Service, Ancestry.com warns customers, “it is possible that information
about you or a genetic relative could be revealed, such as that you or a
relative are carriers of a particular disease. That information could
be used by insurers to deny you insurance coverage, by law enforcement
agencies to identify you or your relatives, and in some places, the data
could be used by employers to deny employment.

This
is a massive red flag.
The data “you or a genetic relative” give to
AncestryDNA could be used against “you or a genetic relative” by
employers, insurers, and law enforcement.

For example, a young woman named Theresa Morelli applied for individual
disability insurance, consented to release of her medical records
through the Medical Information Bureau (a credit reporting agency for
medical history), and was approved for coverage. One month later, Ms.
Morelli’s coverage was cancelled and premiums refunded when the insurer
learned her father had Huntington’s disease, a genetic illness.

Oh tf wow

Ancestry.com is the woooorst. Don’t use them ever.

They also are owned by the LDS church, and get all their genealogy information for the genealogy work the members are pressured to do to make sure their extended family (and all of humankind) gets eternal saving ordinances. The church coerces people into providing free labor in genealogy research under the threat of losing your family in eternity if you don’t. They then take that free labor, aggregate it, and sell it for a profit through Ancestry.com.

So

like

Ancestry.com exploits the free labor of people to sell it, and also exploits your DNA test results to sell them, so that people can exploit you based on the results of those tests, and they make you pay for the privilege.

Don’t ever touch that fucking company.

BY A WHAT

THATS ALL THE BIG SCARIES IN ONE BUG TFFF
JU

Give it a dime, apparently.

Had to go research this thing, and the answer to what to do if it stings you is scream.

from Wikipedia-

“One researcher described the pain as “…immediate, excruciating, unrelenting pain that simply shuts down one’s ability to do anything, except scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations. In terms of scale, the wasp’s sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt sting pain index, second only to that of the bullet ant, and is described by Schmidt as “blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric”.“

Soooooo…dissociate to escape or?

It’s laying eggs in you.

Let’s back up a second and fully appreciate that description.

The Schmidt sting pain index, a widely used classification system for the bites and stings of ants, bees and wasps, is literally the personal ranking system of a guy named Justin Schmidt, who goes around letting bugs sting him for science. Like, that’s this Thing as a scientist.

In one entry, he describes the sting of the common bee as “almost pleasant, [like] a lover just bit your earlobe a little too hard.”

In another, the sting of the yellowjacket is described as “hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.“

So when the Schmidt sting pain index characterises the sting of the tarantula hawk as “blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric”, well, now you know what your standard for comparison is!

this is fascinating but when do we kinkshame Justin Schmidt

If you endorse policies that would eventually lead to the deaths of huge swathes of disabled and chronically ill people, your own motives for doing so might be perfectly reasonable, but some of the results of those policies are functionally indistinguishable from large-scale forcible eugenics, and your support makes you at least partially complicit. It’s mass murder of disabled and chronically ill people via legalized medical neglect, and it doesn’t belong in any society that claims to protect its own citizens.

If that photo doesn’t terrify you then you don’t understand what’s going on

This photo is more threatening than the ones where they were being pulled out of their chairs and zip tied

[Tweet from ADAPT reads, “he had them sent to jail without their wheelchairs clearly senator portman doesn’t care!”

Image is a police officer pulling an empty motorized wheelchair (mobility scooter?) down the street. Another officer and empty chair are in the background.]

Imagine if they’d kept an able-bodied prisoner in a jail cell but kept their legs (and possibly their hands) bound, so they couldn’t stand up, move around in the jail cell, get out of bed or off the floor.

That would be considered inhumane, and torture, right? If that news got out, humanitarian organizations like Amnesty International would be up in arms. You know they would.

That’s what it means when you take away a person’s wheelchair. That’s why it’s terrifying. But because it’s happening to disabled people, no one except the victims is noticing.

Also note: Power mobility aids like those in the photo can cost as much as a brand-new automobile. And if they get damaged because the authorities don’t know what the hell they’re doing (or they do know, and are motivated by spite or malice), then the person will be just as helpless after they get out of jail.

And Medicare will not replace a damaged or broken wheelchair unless it’s at least five years old.

Now imagine being helpless in a jail cell, unable to move, and having  that worry in the back of your mind.

And
no one except the victims is noticing.

Bizarre ant colony discovered in an abandoned Polish nuclear weapons bunker

elzebrook:

currentsinbiology:

For the past several years, a group of researchers has been observing
a seemingly impossible wood ant colony living in an abandoned nuclear
weapons bunker in Templewo, Poland, near the German border. Completely
isolated from the outside world, these members of the species Formica polyctena have created an ant society unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The Soviets built the bunker during the Cold War to store nuclear
weapons, sinking it below ground and planting trees on top as
camouflage. Eventually a massive colony of wood ants took up residence
in the soil over the bunker. There was just one problem: the ants built
their nest directly over a vertical ventilation pipe. When the metal
covering on the pipe finally rusted away, it left a dangerous, open
hole. Every year when the nest expands, thousands of worker ants fall
down the pipe and cannot climb back out. The survivors have nevertheless
carried on for years underground, building a nest from soil and
maintaining it in typical wood ant fashion. Except, of course, that this
situation is far from normal.

Polish Academy of Sciences zoologist Wojciech Czechowski and his
colleagues discovered the nest after a group of other zoologists found
that bats were living in the bunker. Though it was technically not legal
to go inside, the bat researchers figured out a way to squeeze into the
small, confined space and observe the animals inside. Czechowski’s team
followed suit when they heard that the place was swarming with ants.
What they found, over two seasons of observation, was a group of almost a
million worker ants whose lives are so strange that they hesitate to
call them a “colony” in the observations they just published in The Journal of Hymenoptera.

Because conditions in the bunker are so harsh, constantly cold, and
mostly barren, the ants seem to live in a state of near-starvation. They
produce no queens, no males, and no offspring. The massive group
tending the nest is entirely composed of non-reproductive female
workers, supplemented every year by a new rain of unfortunate ants
falling down the ventilation shaft.
