ungrateful, wait with eagerness for the day of their fathers’ deaths (seneca’s de beneficiis)
travel everywhere, take up agriculture instead of letting nature provide (tibullus 1.3)
carp at their parents, praise evil-doers and their violent deeds (hesiod, works and days)
spend too much time talking about philosophy and pretending to be greek to fight wars (plutarch, life of cato the elder)
bad at riding horses (horace, odes 3.24)
can’t lift boulders (homer, iliad 20)
still can’t lift boulders (vergil, aeneid 12)
8. spend all their time declaiming about pirate-chieftains and tyrannicides and oracles commanding human sacrifices and what kind of preparation is that for the real world? (Eumolpus in Petronius, Messala in Tacitus’ Dialogus, a bunch of others)
9. only care about snappy one-liners and ignore good periodic Ciceronian prose (Quintilian, IO 10)
9. take up stupid trendy fads like vegetarianism (Seneca the Younger’s father yelled at him about this, apparently)
10. use philosophy as an excuse to avoid the duties of a Roman senator (Tacitus, Hist. 4.4)
They’re trying to increase taxes on everyone but the wealthy. #KilltheBill
It passed the House yesterday. Time to target the Senate.
Things this bill will do:
Make it almost unaffordable for many people to go to grad school by taxing your tuition waver (this would mean a grad student at a private university would spend 40% of their stipend on taxes)
Repeal the Obamacare mandate making insurance less affordable
Increase taxes on people making less than 70k/year
Save Trump’s family a literal billion dollars
Give a tax break for owning a private jet.
Guys remember resistbot is still a thing!! Text RESIST to 50409 and get moving!!
This is something that is very important to pay attention to, and if you are an American I implore you to do everything that you can! Contact your representatives, research your ISPs, and keep a vigilant eye on this! The FCC is likely to make this ruling close to Thanksgiving in an attempt to squeak it by without anyone noticing.
Net neutrality is the reason why you can visit any website confidently. It’s why you don’t have to pay a premium to be able to access YouTube. It’s why you don’t have the internet bundled into different packages like TV is.
If they remove net neutrality protections, then there is no benefit to the consumer. Put simply, your ISP could choose to charge you more in order to visit specific sites, and not every town in the United States has the option to switch to a new ISP because some ISPs hold a monopoly in some areas.
This is what the internet looks like without net neutrality:
They’re trying to fatigue public resistance by trying to repeal net neutrality as often as possible. We have to stay vigilant. Motivate yourself by assuming no one else is calling/writing. Don’t assume other people will do it.
One thing that so often get underestimated about children from the age of 7-12 is how much they love freaking themselves out. R.L Stein’s body of work was sold to these little devils for a reason.
I was just watching my cousin and her friend and they not only tried to convince me that a strange lady who lived on the playground was going to kidnap them, they successfully convinced themselves a strange lady who lived on the playground was going to kidnap them. I turned my back for a second and they tried to get me to believe one of them had disappeared and been replaced by an identical lookalike named McKenzie. It was all, “what did I see over the hill?” and “is there something in the playground tunnel?” until I gave up and took them back home where it wasn’t mildly grey and spooky looking. Creepypasta has nothing on what the average nine year old will cook up and try to sell you if given the slightest provocation.
If you’re following the Tax cut legislation, you probably already know just how bad this legislation is going to be.
If you’re not, trust me, unless you all are millionaires or heads of corporations, it’s going to be bad.
The people who will be seeing tax increases are lower income people and middle income people. It will be in two stages and it’s going to hurt. If you’re not going to hurt and be paying for it now, you’ll be paying for it soon enough.
The House has passed the tax bill that’s set to make grad school impossible to afford! Please call your senators about this!
^^^^^^^
Seriously this will fuck over basically everyone (except the fucking super rich). Call your senators.
I called the other day, and even though it was after hours they had someone answering the phones. That’s a bad sign. The lines need to be SWAMPED. Start calling, please.
An earthquake killed more than 200 people in Kurdistan, around 5000 are injured. According to Iranian media, several villages were destroyed in the earthquake. The earthquake was felt in the entire region from Kuwait to Northern Kurdistan cities. Local media says the death toll is likely to rise, especially in the eastern part of Kurdistan.
I will update this if there’s going to be a donation for those affected by the earthquake.
Iran’s semi-official Isna news agency raised the death toll to 328.
Sarpol-e Zahab in Kermanshah has only one hospital, which was demolished in this incident. All patients and hospital staff have been buried beneath the rubble.
The health ministry put out a call for emergency blood donations. So far, 360 people were reported to have died. The Iranian government reported that at least 70,000 citizens would need shelter.
If you’re from Germany, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, England, Norway, Italy, Syria or Japan, you can donate to Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê e. V./Kurdish Red Moon. A vital part of Kurdish Red Moon’s work is to provide immediate assistance in war zones and during natural disasters.
