George Jackson was writing about the path to this stuff 50 years ago before he was murdered in prison, it’s amazing how little has changed since then.

“The new pigs usually have to serve a period on the goon squad before they fall into their regular role on the animal farm. They are always anxious to try their new skills-“to see if it really works” -we were always forced to do something to slow them down, to demonstrate that violence was a twoedged sword. This must be done at least once every year, or we would all be as punchy and fractured as a Thai Boxer before our time was up. The brothers wanted to protest. The usual protest was a strike, a work stoppage, closing the sweatshops where industrial products are worked up for two cents an hour. (Some people get four cents after they’ve been on the job for six months.) The outside interests who made the profits didn’t dig strikes. That meant the captain didn’t like them either since it meant pressure on him from these free-enterprising political connections.“

Vast majority are non violent drug offenders that dont belong there due to theocratic prohibition. They are humans. Systematic solitary confinement is unconstitutional. Working for under a dollar an hour is creating monopolies, destroying jobs in their communities, and is unethical. This is also lost revenue for struggling cities. America has the largest prison population in the world. We do not have the lowest crime by far. What is the point?

“One possible reason is that some of corporate media’s biggest advertisers use prison labor, so the disincentive to shine a light on the problem is high. AT&T, Bank of America, Chevron, Eli Lilly, GEICO, McDonald’s, and Walmart all use prison labor and all are sponsors of corporate media so much we can recite their commercials by heart. One corporation that uses prison labor, Verizon, even owns major media outlets Yahoo and Huffington Post.” (from the article above)

Just pointing out that as easy as it is to shit on Buzzfeed they are ALSO the only media outlet I’ve seen post updates on this story that I haven’t found directly through Tumblr: https://www.buzzfeed.com/coralewis/guards-join-striking-prisoners-in-alabama?utm_term=.ffZWoOaxw#.orY6mgq8Q

And it’s a big important update – the guards have joined the strike for at least one shift at at least one prison.

Mt. Erebus in Antarctica, the southernmost active volcano in the world, is known for the numerous ice fumaroles – also known as ice chimneys – that dot the surrounding landscape. The ice towers are created when snow and ice begin to form around gas escaping from the pressurized caves beneath the ground. These caves are of special interest to astrobiologists, as they are untouched by humans and contain only extremophile bacteria and fungi. It is believed that such caves may exist on Mars, suggesting that it may be possible for life to exist there.

Ancient Roman coins unearthed from castle ruins in Okinawa

archaeologicalnews:

NAHA, OKINAWA PREF. – Coins issued in ancient Rome have been excavated from the ruins of a castle in a city in Okinawa Prefecture, the local education board said Monday, the first time such artifacts have been recovered from ruins in Japan.

The education board of the city of Uruma said the four copper coins believed to date back to the Roman Empire in the third to fourth centuries were discovered in the ruins of Katsuren Castle, which existed from the 12th century to the 15th.

Okinawa’s trade with China and the Southeast Asian region was thriving at the time and the finding is “precious historical material suggesting a link between Okinawa and the Western world,” the board said. Read more.

Prison Strike in America Phone Zap

Alright Comrades.

As you might have heard the largest prison strike in America has been taking place against modern day slavery for three weeks without a peep in the mainstream news. Even if you’re on the outside, you can help the prisoners… The IWW Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee is organizating a phone zap system to keep tabs on the prison wardens and keep them in the hot seat, and mainly to let them know that people on the outside are watching them. If you have a phone and a spare moment you can help our organizers and prisoners and show solidarity with their demands out by calling the numbers on this phone, reading the scripts and writing your name at the end to show that you called.

…even if you can’t call for whatever reason, you can still spread this message to those who can and help out our fellow workers behind bars..

Hey followers, reblogging this in hopes that at least some of you can take a few minutes of your day this week to read up on this and call or e-mail to show support for the prison strike. This has not had anywhere near the attention it deserves and prison authorities need to know that people on the outside support the human rights of prisoners and care about their cause

Throwback to the time my poor German teacher had to explain the concept of formal and informal pronouns to a class full of Australians and everyone was scandalised and loudly complained “why can’t I treat everyone the same?” “I don’t want to be a Sie!” “but being friendly is respectful!” “wouldn’t using ‘du’ just show I like them?” until one guy conceded “I suppose maybe I’d use Sie with someone like the prime minister, if he weren’t such a cunt” and my teacher ended up with her head in her hands saying “you are all banned from using du until I can trust you”
