why does no one ever like. mention the weird part of all of our childhoods where we thought we were too cool for the shows we grew up with like i Know that wasnt just an isolated thing like everyone used to make fun of dora the explorer and barney especially i remember everyone used to sing to the tune of barney “i hate you, you hate me, lets strap barney to a tree, with a great big bomb and stick it through his head, 3-2-1 barneys dead” like….. that was so fucked,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, why was that a thing……
we used to sing “i hate you, you hate me, let’s all go and kill barney, with a baseball and a two by four, no more purple dinosaur”
there were probably hundreds of variations ive heard so many thts fcked
How did it even happen, there was no internet for us to get our grubby little paws on, no memes making fun of children’s shows, it was just a bunch of small telepathically linked children hating a purple dinosaur in unison ???
It’s a common part of the development of children. An analogous phenomenon are the people two-three years older than the intended audience spewing horrifying, bizarre invective about Disney popstars and bad YA novels.
And as to how this stuff became so widespread pre-interent? Oral transmission! Playround songs are really just another kind of folklore, and they get passed around and mutate the same. You hear the older kids singing one version on the bus (and if the older kids are doing something then it must be cool and grown-up) so you teach it to your friends at recess, but you don’t quite remember all the words, so you replace that part with something else that makes sense, and then your friends pass it on too…and so on.
Kid folklore is so great and so, so gross and violent. i love it
