There is such a thing as the uncomfortable junction where two different people need two opposing things from fiction, for equally valid reasons:

  • There are people who need to see disabled heroes fucked up, failing at self care, unable to hold down a goddamn job because sometimes? Life sucks, disability sucks, and if even literal superheroes struggle with this stuff, it makes them feel less alone
  • There are also people who need to see disabled characters shining, being competent, kicking ass in spite of (or even because of!) their disabilities
  • Both of these needs are equally valid

So we’re going to need to take a big step back and practice saying “I am not the right audience for this” (and maybe following/unfollowing accordingly)

It is okay to have strong feelings, it’s okay to have specific needs, but guilt tripping everyone who doesn’t relate to fiction the same way you do is pretty uncool
