The fact that JJ and co. are giving the OT purists a freepass for bashing the PT fans and all of the younger generation fans (who grew up on the Prequels and TCW + Rebels) + proclaiming their righteousness of “WE USED ONLY PRACTICAL EFFECTS. EVERYTHING IS 100% REAL” is really grossing me out.
I mean…just look at these:
But what exactly IS a “fan”??
“we all did”………REALLY???
And episodes 1-3, The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows aren’t??
Do they realize how much damage they’re doing here?! Are they really trying to write off AN ENTIRE GENERATION that grew up on the newer additions to the SW universe?? Sure, It’s totally fine that you would want to cater to the older fans, to please them, but trust me – this ain’t gonna last for long. Because these people, they only live on the nostalgia factor. It’s nearly impossible to preserve it because like it or not, the original cast, with all due respect, won’t be here in a couple of decades or years (that being said – I only wish them well and hope they do stick around for as long as possible).
And bottom line – you CAN’T LIVE IN THE PAST. It’s true that the PT films have a lot of flaws, but the general use of more CGI in them over practical effects does not make them any less “real Star Wars movies”. Again, I don’t think there were less practical effects at all. There are entire scenes that were filmed outside the studios in the desert + practical shots and effects used in other scenes in a compositing process (e.g. Mustafar scenes, Naboo’s Theed palace).
I think that, after two years of being in this fandom, it’s safe to say that I never in my life have seen so many people complain about CGI in movies! This is flat out ridiculous and childish. I dunno who’s in charge of what’s coming out of JJ and co.’s mouth, but they need to stop bashing the PT for relying on CGI. We need to remember that technology is something that evolves all the time, and that’s what George Lucas wanted at that that time. You can argue about the script or the acting or the dialogues all you want, but saying that the CGI is one of the reasons why the Prequels suck is fucking childish and absurd.
I hope they realize that what they’re doing is wrong and that no matter what – you can’t always please everyone, and your target audience is not only consisted of 40-50 something year olds who cling to their vintage pieces of original Star Wars merchandise and first edition VHS tapes.
